Monaco Overview
The Principality
of Monaco is the second-smallest country in the world after the

fame to its casinos. Gambling has been the master of Monte-Carlo
since 1863, when Prince Charles III inaugurated the first great
casino.
The royal dynasty, the , is an inseparable part of Monaco's history. The royals made world headlines in 1956 when the former monarch Prince Rainier III married the American film star Grace Kelly. HSH Prince Albert II took over as head of state following the death of his father in April 2005.
Although
strong in the banking sector, it's tourism that drives the economy,
with gamblers flocking to the in Monte-Carlo, and every May the Principality hosts
the world-famous . To its credit, Monaco also plays host to other world-class
sports tournaments, including yachting and tennis championships,
as well as hundreds of cultural events each year.
